Collecting Mats
| We collected microbial mats form Pond 4, on the dike between Pond 4 and Pond 5 to take back to our greenhouse at Ames Research Center. This means, cutting mats in the pond, transporting them back to shore, and then trimming them so that they fit into acrylic trays that we place in our flow boxes back at Ames. The photos below show various steps in that process. We need to be careful at all times to keep the mats from getting too much sun, or they will heat up, and many of the microorganisms will die. The mats are back at Ames within about 48 hours after being collected. |
